Finger pointing over DTV delay begins at the FCC
5 February 2009 17:05 by Rich "vurbal" Fiscus

US President Obama and Congressional Democrats have been the subject of much criticism over the DTV transition being delayed until June 12. And to be fair Congressional oversight in the months and years leading up to this point has been less than thorough. But the FCC, whom Congress delegated most of their responsibility to, shares more than a little of the blame. In particular, former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin was responsible for that agency's leadership or lack therof.

After the bill authorizing the delay passed the House of Representatives, FCC commissioners Jonathan Adelstein and Robert M. McDowell and acting Chairman Michael Copps shared their thoughts on the situation. All praised Congress for the legislation and agreed that the additional time is important for preparing the public. They also unanimously criticized the inaction of the previous Chair.

Commissioner Adelstein went the furthest, saying "this national transition has been mismanaged and plagued by the lack of a coherent and coordinated strategy. More time was desperately needed to correct the mistakes that many, including leaders in Congress, the Government Accountability Office, and every current member of the FCC, have long raised."

While it's certainly true that Kevin Martin's laissez-faire approach to the transition was criticized by the GAO, the other commissioners haven't exactly been outspoken opponents, at least not publically.

Sure Commissioner McDowell sent a letter to Martin complaining about the situation. But in typical Washington DC fashion he waited until a week before the then-Chairman was scheduled to step down - just a month before the February 17 deadline originally set for the transition. If he, or anyone else who was in office at the time, would like to point fingers they would be well served by stepping in front of a mirror first.

BS.. It is as ready as it ever will be.. The coupons defiantly was miss managed.. the rocket scientist that gave the coupons a 90 day expiration date should get the hook, but come on, its not going to make any difference now or in 4 months.. it will not work well and a lot of folks will be heading over to radio shack for a antenna.. It does not set a good example for the folks who saw the deadline and proactively got the boxes and antenna's. Its like changing the date taxes are due because of the tuff times.. Sounds nice, but it wont make a bit of difference ..

Dlsh who?

The deadline delay is optional for TV stations, not mandatory. All of the local TV stations in my area have already announced that they will stick with the original cut-off date for the analog signals. Why would they continue to broadcast in both digital and analog signals if they don't have to? It just costs them more money to broadcast in both. I'm sure the majority of TV stations will feel the same way and the analog signal will be dropped on the original deadline date. These stations have been preparing for this for a long time and to not cut the analog signal then would be a waste of money on their part.

As far as the coupons for the converter boxes....I don't think there should have ever been a coupon for the boxes to start with. Think of how much taxpayer money went to coupons. Digital Tv is just a newer technology. Is the goverment going to send me a coupon to purchase a DVD or Blu-Ray player because my VCR is obsolete? No, and they shouldn't. The converter boxes are less than $40.00 if you need one, and the majority of the people who applied for and received the coupons did not even need the boxes. They got them because the government was giving the coupons for free, so why not? Now the ones that got the coupons that didn't need the boxes are capitalizing on the people that waited until the last minute and really needed them by selling them. Look on Fleabay and you'll see thousands of these boxes for sale that were bought with government coupons. What a waste of taxpayer money! But, what else is new....End of rant.

My local tv station is dropping analog on the 17th as planned. This station is a small station and can't afford to run the analog transmitters 4 more months plus the digital transmitters. They had already kicked their digital transmitters in to test them to be ready for Feb 17th.

It cost the station about $10,000 per month to run the analog transmitters, thats $40,000 for 4 months plus the cost of running the digital transmitters.

I am one that got 2 $40 coupons that didn't need a converter box, but i'm giving both of the boxes away to 2 old widows that can't afford a new tv or a converter box. My 2 boxes are knot for sale.
The main problem with our country is a thing called greed.

I think the truth about the delay has more to do with antenna's.. The boxes seem to have a signal problem, It seems that the new units are not as forgiving as the analogue counter parts.. Who is going on the roof in February? the fiasco will ensue when everyone is forced to use the only UHF transmission. The masses will not be able to understand why the need for the change now after they have fooled around with the date.. BAD PR!
